The Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) has granted approval to the proposal submitted by various electricity supply companies in the state for a revision in power tariffs starting from July 1. Following the revision, consumers using 100 units per month will face an additional cost ranging from Rs 19 to Rs 31, depending on the supplying company, for a period of six months.
The increased rates per unit will be 31 paise for Bescom customers, 27 paise for Hescom, 26 paise for Gescom, 21 paise for Mescom, and 19 paise for CESC. The tariff hike will remain in effect until December 2022, as stated in the order issued by the KERC.
The decision to raise electricity tariffs has drawn criticism from opposition party leaders. Former Chief Minister and Congress leader Siddaramaiah accused the BJP of burdening the common man, especially during a period of inflation and rising fuel prices. He urged the government to reconsider the tariff hike, emphasizing that it comes within three months of the previous increase in April.
Similarly, HD Kumaraswamy, a senior leader of the Janata Dal (Secular), called on the Karnataka government to revoke the decision, stating that the BJP prioritizes the interests of the wealthy over those of the poor. Despite surplus power and good rainfall in the state, he questioned the necessity for a tariff hike.
